Investment Policy

Investment policies document the expectations that the plan sponsor has for their investment program. By having an investment policy and following it, a plan sponsor may show that they are taking their fiduciary responsibilities seriously. An investment policy also serves as a communication tool to plan participants as well as individuals responsible for implementing the retirement plan.

The plan sponsor seeking to show a fiduciary investment process should not only have an investment policy, but also have supporting material to show they follow their investment policy. This supporting material could include ongoing performance reviews, as well as documents showing how the investment managers were selected. • Purpose and background.
• Delegation of responsibilities.
• Review procedures.

Investment Issues

• Define investment program and investment options to be offered.
• Selection criteria for investment options.
• Investment objectives, guidelines, and restrictions for each investment options.
• Performance and risk standards for each investment options.
